PROJECT PHASES
Our Play Space Renewal Project has been approved by the St James Assiniboia School Division in 3 phases. The phases were created to allow us to complete segments of the project as the funds become available through fundraising efforts, sponsorship opportunities, public funding and grants. The components and order of the phases were determined by function as well as cost.
FUNCTION According to the most recent safety report, the existing wooden structure is projected to serve until the summer of 2028, allowing us to create an innovative alternative play space as seen in phase 1 + 2, while still maintaining accessibility to the current play space during construction. Play can then be transitioned to the newly constructed area upon implementation of phase 3 ensuring a continuous and enjoyable experience for all.
COST The projected cost for the Play Space Renewal Project is $347,000. Given the ambitious timeline and financial goals set for the project, careful planning and efficient resource allocation are crucial to ensure successful implementation. By strategically phasing out the construction, we not only maintain project momentum but also optimize the utilization of available funds. Collaborating with community leaders like MLA Logan Oxenham and City Councilor Evan Duncan is instrumental in securing additional funding sources to bridge the gap towards our total projected cost. With $120,000+ already raised, possible alternative funding sources and ongoing grant applications, we are optimistic that we will be able to execute phases 1 and 2 this summer/fall. The decision to defer phase 3 to 2026 allows us to prioritize the completion of essential phases while ensuring a sustainable and well-executed project delivery.
PHASE 1 Encompasses all the landscaping work that takes place outside of the current play space (No. 2, 3, 4, 5 + 6 on the plan). The projected cost for this phase is $147,500. The design elements in this phase include:
Extensive tree planting to provide shade, wind protection and aesthetic appeal, as well as a variety of shrubs to enhance the overall look
Creation of walking paths and low bridge crossing (No. 6 on plan)
Addition of outdoor seating areas (No. 3, 4 + 7 on plan)
Areas of elevation/hills that not only serve to correction to the existing low spots in the field, but also allow for multi-seasonal creative play (No 4 + 2 on plan)
PHASE 2 This is the most cost effective phase in the design. With a quoted cost of $47,000. this phase comprises of the play equipment that exists within the design area of phase 1 with an accessible communication board that will be installed in the existing pea gravel play space. The design elements in this phase include:
SWINGS (No. 1 on plan)
4 bays with a total of 8 swings
7 Belt swings and one accessible molded bucket seat with harness
8 - 36” x 36” FibarMats
Pressure treated timber border, with Fibar substrate
BUDDY BENCH (No. 7 on plan)
A designated bench, placed in an open and well traversed area, where children can sit if they are feeling lonely or would like to talk. This signals other children to engage.
COMMUNICATION BOARD a permanent fixture at the entrance of the play space that features pictures or symbols, words, numbers and letters assisting non-verbal, early learners and children who are learning English as another language in their communication.
PHASE 3 The expense of this Phase encompasses the cost and installation of a free standing net climber and communication board, as well as the cost to remove the existing wooden structure with the pea gravel substrate. The estimated cost of this phase is $152,500.
NET CLIMBER (No. 1 on plan)
Promotes upper body strength, balance and eye-hand coordination for youth aged 5-12
The many climbing points on the existing wooden structure is what makes our beloved structure so appealing. It is for this reason that a net climber was selected as a replacement.
